How to Help Protect Trees This Winter

admin admin • November 1, 2016

Big Ben’s Tree Service in Jacksonville has tips for protecting your trees for the winter season.

Protecting your trees from harsh winter conditions starts in the fall. Although, a tree that has been taken care of throughout the spring and summer is more likely to survive the winter.

  • Drought - Winter conditions leave plants feeling like they are in a drought. Winds are dry and running water might be scarce. Make sure to water your trees well through the fall until the ground starts to freeze.
  • Drainage - Make sure the soil around your trees drains well. The freezing and thawing cycle of winter can actually push roots to the surface. Protect your trees’ root systems by improving the soil that surrounds them.
  • Ground Cover - Mulching is very important. These benefits are twofold. It keeps the soil temperature constant and holds moisture in. You can use wood chips, sawdust or leaves and branches. Stop mulching a few inches from the base of the tree to discourage rodents from snacking on the bark.
  • Shelters - The best way to protect against snow and ice and the wind is to plant trees in sheltered areas. You can also build temporary shelters out of carpet or burlap. Make a little fence out of wooden poles and burlap on the north side of your tree. This will block out some of the wind and snow.

Take good care of your trees year-round, so they are hardy enough to survive the winter. Protect them from snow, drought, freezing temperatures and depredation. Call Big Ben’s Tree Service at 904-641-1131 for more information on protecting your trees.
